How to Choose a Luxury Cat Collar

Material

Cat collars are often available in a wide range of different materials from synthetics such as nylon and polyester, to natural fibres like hemp and cotton, and other natural materials like cork and leather. Each material will offer its own unique properties. Whilst some materials will offer the benefit of being very durable, they may not be the most comfortable for your cat. It can be tricky to get that perfect balance, especially when other elements such as texture and smell should be considered too - you might be surprised at how import scent is to you cat!

Ideally, look for a material that is soft, lightweight and flexible, so that it allows your cat to move unrestricted as they explore. It needs to be scratch and fray resistant whilst offering a softness that provides comfort for your cat. A comfy collar should deter your cat from scratching or clawing at it.

Lastly, for ultra-kitty comfort, consider the material on the inside of the collar. This should be as soft and gentle on kitty fur as the outside of their collar. Sadly, some collars can have rougher internal linings (for example a rough suede lining on a leather collar). As this is the part that’s in constant contact with your cat’s body, it’s essential that it’s smooth and can glide across your cat’s fur with ease. We understand how import this is, so here at Supakit, we double line all of our collars so that the inside is as soft and luxurious as the outside.

Style and Colour

When it comes to style, look for a collar that has a sleek, body hugging profile. Large embellishments or hardware on a collar can be a safety hazard, and can add unnecessary weight to your cat’s collar.

As for colour, the choice is yours! Pick a colour that highlights your cat’s personality. Bright colours can help with spotting your cat if they are hiding or at night.

Safety

A breakaway buckle is an essential safety feature for all cat collars. It’s a special buckle that is designed to come apart if your cat is ever caught by their collar.

At Supakit, we offer our collars with a choice of quick-release breakaway buckles – ‘kitten' for lighter weight cats that are just getting started with their collars, and ‘adult’ for cats over 2.5kg / 5.5lbs

Comfort

Comfort is extremely important when it comes to cat collars. This is why it’s so important to look for something that’s manufactured from soft materials and has good feedback from pet owners.

Durability

It’s important that your cat’s collar is durable enough to keep up with their daily adventures. It should be resistant to fraying and scratching. But it should also be so comfortable that your cat isn’t motivated to scratch at it constantly. It is important to also ensure a good fit, so that it hugs your cat’s body, reducing the risk of it snagging and getting lost.

Identification

Giving your cat a visible form of ID (in addition to their microchip) is an essential way to help your cat be identified and reunited with you if they are ever lost. A collar also shows others who may encounter your cat that they are loved, and not a stray.

Do Bells on Collars Annoy Cats?

The low volume of a bell (~50 dB) is not loud enough to cause any physical damage to your cat’s ears. Over time, they can become desensitised to the sound and sensation of its presence. If you choose to put a bell on your cat’s collar, it is a good idea to introduce them to collar wearing first without any bells or accessories, then introduce the bell afterwards. No two cats are the same, so keep an eye on your cat’s body language to make sure the bell isn’t causing them any stress or discomfort.

What is the Prettiest Cat Collar?

The prettiest cat collar is the one that best serves your cat’s needs and looks good whilst doing so! Handmade cat collars are often a nice touch.

Do Indoor Cats Need Collars?

As study in the US found that a sizable 40% of missing cats were indoor-only cats who had escaped from their homes. Putting a safety collar and visible ID tag on an indoor cat is an important way to help them be reunited with you if they ever escape or are lost. You can use the ID tag to engrave ‘indoor cat’ or ‘I should be indoors’ as a way to alert anybody who runs into your missing cat that they need help.

Why Do Cats Take Off Their Collars?

Cats take off their collars when they see an opportunity to do so, this is often a result of a collar being too loose or being introduced too quickly. Wearing a collar is a new sensation for your cat, so introducing it gradually can be super helpful in teaching your cat that a collar is perfectly fine to wear.

If your cat’s collar isn’t fitted correctly, it may also be causing irritation around your cat’s neck. If your cat can feel the collar around its neck, it may try to remove it. Loose fitting collars allow enough space for your cat to get their mouth or paws around a collar, and ‘pop’ it off. This is why a good snug fit is so important.

Another sense to consider is smell. Your cat has a sensitive nose and if it doesn’t like the smell of a collar, it’s another reason for it to try and whisk it off! We developed our collars to solve this issue. Our breakaway collars are made from lightweight yet strong natural materials that are ultra-soft and comfy, and most importantly of all - smell right to a cat.

Are There Risks In Your Cat Wearing a Collar?

There are minimal risks to your cat wearing a collar if your cat’s collar is fitted correctly, made of a material suitable for cats and has a safety feature like a quick-release or breakaway buckle. Non-breakaway collars have higher risks of cats getting trapped and strangulation.
