What Makes a Cat Collar Unique?

There are various things that can make cat collars unique. It may be their overall design, the colours or prints available, materials used or bespoke design features.

How to Choose a Unique Cat Collar

Safety Features

A breakaway buckle is an essential safety feature for all cat collars. It’s a special buckle that is designed to come apart if your cat is ever caught by their collar.

At Supakit, we offer our breakaway collars with a choice of quick-release breakaway buckles – ‘kitten' for lighter weight cats that are just getting started with their collars, and ‘adult’ for cats over 2.5kg / 5.5lbs.

Style and Colour

The best style of collar is one that has a sleek, body hugging profile. Large embellishments or hardware on a collar can be a safety hazard, and can add unnecessary weight to your cat’s collar.

As for colour, choose which ever colour you feel works best for your cutie. Pick a chic colour that highlights your cat’s personality. Bright or fluorescent colours can help with spotting your cat if they are hiding or at night. Quirky features like a bowtie or jewellery can add lots of personality.

You can also add a personalised ID tag so your cat’s collar will be truly unique to them.

Material

There are a variety of different materials to choose from when it comes to cat collars. From synthetics such as nylon and polyester, to natural fibres like hemp and cotton, and other natural materials like cork and leather. Each material will offer its own unique properties. Whilst some materials will offer the benefit of being very durable, they may not be the most comfortable for your cat. It can be tricky to get that perfect balance, especially when other elements such as texture and smell should be considered too - you might be surprised at how import scent is to you cat!

Ideally, look for a material that is soft, lightweight and flexible, so that it allows your cat to move unrestricted as they explore. It needs to be scratch and fray resistant whilst offering a softness that provides comfort for your cat. A comfy collar should deter your cat from scratching or clawing at it.

Lastly, for ultra-kitty comfort, consider the material on the inside of the collar. This should be as soft and gentle on kitty fur as the outside of their collar. Sadly, some collars can have rougher internal linings (for example a rough suede lining on a leather collar). As this is the part that’s in constant contact with your cat’s body, it’s essential that it’s smooth and can glide across your cat’s fur with ease. We understand how import this is, so here at Supakit, we double line all of our collars so that the inside is as soft and luxurious as the outside.

Choose a stylish collar that’s handmade with care, from designers who know about cat.

Fit and Size

Fit and size are important in ensuring that your cat remains safe whilst wearing their collar. Their collar should fit snug to their neck. At Supakit we advise that the collar is tight enough that only one fingertip fits between the neck on the collar.

As for size, you want to choose a collar that is fully adjustable so it always remains a close fit. As your cat grows or matures, their size may change so the fit of the collar should be checked regularly so it can be adjusted if your cat’s neck changes in size. It’s cool to have a well fitted collar.

Weight

Lightweight cat collars are preferred as they provide the most comfort for your cat. Having something heavy and bulky around their neck can be irritating and uncomfortable. This is particularly true for kittens, so ensure the collar is made for a kittens neck.

Leash Options

In the interest of safety, leashes should not be directly attached to your cat’s leash. They should be attached to a harness.

Do Cats Legally Need to Wear a Collar?

You should check with your local authority or council to determine whether your cat is legally required to wear a collar. In most cases though, it is not a legal requirement for your cat to wear a collar.

Should My Cat Wear the Same Collar Indoors as Outdoors?

Yes, your cat should wear the same collar indoors as they do outdoors as long as the collar is fitted correctly.

Should You Put a Collar on a Large Cat?

Yes, you should put a collar on a large cat. Irrespective of size, all cats can wear collars. If your cat is larger, make sure that the collar is a comfortable fit and that the breakaway buckle is suitable for their weight.
