Here at Supakit, we’ve always dreamed of offering a vegan alternative alongside our ethically sourced leather range. But finding the right material was no easy task! We knew how important the natural scent of our accessories is to cats when they’re meeting them for the first time, so a synthetic substitute just wouldn’t do. Most faux leathers are made from fossil fuel-based plastics, which not only smell unnatural to sensitive kitty noses but also come with a heavy environmental cost.
Enter cork. You might picture it as rigid and crumbly, like a wine cork, but this wonder material can do so much more. With gentle processing, cork transforms into a soft, flexible material with the look and feel of leather. Take a peek at the video below to see just how smooth and bendy it really is!
Keeping Your Kitty's Carbon Pawprint Low
Our cork material comes from cork oak trees, which are harvested just once every nine years. The trees themselves can live for well over 200 years, and the harvesting process doesn’t harm them – in fact, it helps them thrive. Each time the bark is carefully removed by hand, the tree begins a new cycle of growth that actively draws carbon out of the atmosphere, making cork one of the rare materials with a net carbon-removing effect.
Even better, our cork is harvested only a few miles down the road from our workshop in Spain, keeping it wonderfully local and sustainable from start to finish.

When customers ask us whether leather or cork is best for their cat, we usually say it comes down to personal choice – they’re equally supple, strong and beautiful. But when it comes to waterproofing, cork has the clear edge. Our leather accessories are splashproof but our cork range can handle full immersion in water!
