Getting the right harness

Before you get started with how to leash train your cat, you want to make sure you have the right equipment. It’s essential to select a cat harness that’s specially designed for cats. Look for one that is going to be secure and comfortable for your cat and that still allows them to move and explore without restriction.

The Supakit harness is a pioneering design which cradles a cat’s body without putting any stress on their limbs, neck or head. It evenly distributes weight across the chest and its adjustability allows you to achieve a snug and secure fit. This will stop the harness from rubbing against your cat’s fur as they adventure. We also use premium materials such as leather and vegan cork to ensure that not only it feels lovely to wear but it smells ‘right’ to your cat too so that it’s love at first sniff. Last but not least, we’ve made a harness that’s super easy to put on, with just one buckle to fasten – simple!

How to leash train a cat

It might sound silly but cats aren’t born knowing how to walk in a harness – in the same that you weren’t born knowing how to ride a bike! But just like learning to ride a bike, you can teach your cat to walk with a harness and leash.

When considering how to train a cat to walk on a leash, the learning process should be gradual, fun and completely stress free for your cat, so that they actively fall in love with their harness and are excited to put it on. That means we shouldn’t see any flops or funny walks – these are signs of a leash training that hasn’t been done the right way.

We’re so passionate about getting you and your cat off to the best possible start with leash and harness training that we developed a free 10-day harness training bootcamp that guides you, step-by-step through the process and keeps it fun and engaging for your cat. This process is known to be the best method for successful leash training, and all it takes is 5 minutes a day! Simply click here to get started.

Safe space training

Before you head out on adventures with your cat, it is really important to teach them how to use a ‘safe space’. This can be a carrier, stroller or backpack that you bring with you on all of your outings. Safe space training is a fundamental skill for adventure cats as in times of convenience, danger or rest, they should have somewhere safe and secure to retreat to.

You can get started with our backpack training guide, or for more in-depth instruction, check out our Complete Cat Harness Training Course, where we offer comprehensive training including safe space and recall, to best prepare your cat for outdoor explorations. Led by our in-house feline training expert, the course guides you through 7 modules with video tutorials, supporting documents and chat support so you can tailor training to meet your cat’s individual needs.
